Do you love the market but find yourself occasionally confused or flustered by all the unknowns? Is it okay to sample or to ask a lot of questions? Can you bring your dog? Is this the best tomato of the day? Or maybe you avoid the market altogether because it just seems so insider-y?

We love our farmers markets here at Kitchn, but we totally get it: Sometimes the experience can be challenging. So we decided to tap the experts at CUESA, the nonprofit organization that runs San Francisco's iconic Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, for their insider farmers market tricks and tips.

...we were delighted to discover how the dedicated and enthusiastic staff at CUESA gets the most from shopping the market. Here are 10 tips for making the most of your farmers market experience and practicing good etiquette too!

For us, etiquette at the market isn't just about making the most of your purchases, but ensuring the safety of everyone who attends.

Please be on the look out for our little shoppers, our elderly shoppers and people who may require a cane, wheelchair or similar instrument. Be patient and allow plenty of space for all of our customers to move about and enjoy their visit. And, if possible, leave the dog at home.

A glass of red wine daily may add years to your life and life to your years!

The key may be consistency and moderation per the longevity peoples in places like Sardinia and Okinawa. It appears to reduce stress and the damaging effects of inflammation resulting in lower rates of heart disease. However, caution is in order as studies have shown increased risk (17%) of breast cancer associated with alcohol consumption. (1) The good news is that this risk was only increased in women who also had low folic acid levels. Green leafy veggies are rich in folic acid and 400 mcg of folic acid supplementation will prevent this deficit. (2) Also, when more than one glass of wine is consumed, we lose the benefits and increase the toxic effects to liver and brain.

Polyphenol antioxidants in red wine are thought to be the explanation for the beneficial effects on heart disease. (1)

Finally, light to moderate alcohol consumption (between 1 drink per month and 2 drinks daily) has been shown to be associated with decreased atherosclerotic plaques and may be the reason for a decreased stroke risk in these people. (3)
