Worthington Farmers Market: January 12

Taste Education: Winter Squash

Kitchen boredom setting in? Want to try something new? Curious for a new recipe?

The Worthington Farmers Market will host "Taste Education" tomorrow starting at 9 AM to inspire healthy eating, and connect you with your food and its producer(s).

This series will reflect the diversity of our ingredients and the creativity of our dedicated volunteers who prepare them. Samples, recipes, printed information, or the raw ingredients themselves may be a few ways you'll enjoy our "Taste Education" series.

This month, it's all about winter squash. Did you know that winter squash is an annual fruit representing several squash species within the genus Cucurbita? It differs from summer squash in that it is harvested and eaten in the mature fruit stage when the seeds within have matured fully and the skin has hardened into a tough rind. Common examples include butternut, delicata and acorn, to name a few.

Healthy and delicious? Yes, please! A great way to eat local throughout the winter? Absolutely!

It's also Yoga at the Market with Jade Yoga and Wellness starting at 12:15 PM. Grab your mat and enjoy a free yoga session!

Don't be intimidated by a full parking lot! Use any of the lots indicated below.

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Health Tip #28: "Stinking Rose" Daily for Your Heart

Garlic, also referred to as stinking rose, has been shown to have multiple health benefits.

Daily use of garlic has been shown in many scientific studies to provide cardiovascular benefit, including significant reductions in the risk of heart attack and stroke, decreasing the rate of development of atherosclerosis and coronary calcification as well as reducing blood pressure.

Additionally, garlic has potent anti-bacterial properties and has been shown in excellent studies to reduce the incidence of colds by up to 50%! Finally, garlic has been shown to be an effective lead detoxifier and reduce the symptoms of lead toxicity.

Aim for a clove daily for long term health benefits.

Be well. See you at the Farmers Market Saturday!
