The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Health Tip #30: Eat Your Sprouts

Eat your sprouts!

Where do we get fresh, local, organic greens in the middle of winter in Ohio? Sprouts at the market or easily grown yourself at home. Cruciferous vegetables have been shown to contain many important nutrients, one is called sulforaphane which has been shown to have many health benefits including protective effects against many types of cancer. Broccoli sprouts 5-6 days old contain 100x's greater concentration of sulforaphane than a mature broccoli plant. Sulforaphane has been shown to turn on genes leading to the production of glutathione, our bodies "master antioxidant" which quenches free radicals and reduces inflammation seen in many of today's chronic diseases.

Be well. See you at the Farmers Market Saturday!
