Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.
Health Tip #34: Magnesium, the Miraculous Mineral
3,751 human proteins have binding sites for magnesium. Greater than 350 chemical processes in our bodies are activated by magnesium. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in our bodies and it is the reason why vegetables are green.
It is estimated that more than 80% of us are deficient in this important mineral. (1) This has been verified repeatedly by surveys showing daily magnesium intake is usually below the recommended daily allowance (RDA). This is due in large part to high intake of nutrient-depleted refined and processed foods in the standard American diet (SAD). Additionally, studies have shown that there has been a 21-35% decline in magnesium content of fresh fruits and vegetables between the years 1949-2000. (2)
Magnesium is shown to prevent migraines, lower heart disease mortality, improve diabetes control and HDL (good) cholesterol levels, reduce pain associated with fibromyalgia, decrease risk of colon cancer, strengthen bones, and reduce signs of metabolic syndrome like decreasing blood pressure and triglycerides. (1)
Good sources of magnesium include nuts, whole grains, legumes, leafy green vegetables, fish, meat and dairy products. (2)
Be well. See you at the Farmers Market Saturday!
