Here comes the sun...and so much more at tomorrow's Market - May 18

NEW! Green Plate Special!

Unfortunately, due to mechanical issues with our food truck partner, we were unable to offer the Green Plate Special at last week's Market. So, we are eagerly anticipating the premier at tomorrow's Market!

The Green Plate Special is a weekly collaboration between a Market producer and a local food truck that will incorporate the producer's featured product in a special dish, just for the Farmers Market!

This week, we're saying, "CHEESE" as we feature Whetstone cheese from Kokoborrego Cheese in a Market special grilled cheese sandwich created by the Blu Olive food truck. $1.00 of every Green Plate Special sold will be donated back to the Worthington Farmers Market to further our mission to "Encourage, support and promote the entrepreneurial efforts of local, independent, and small-scale farmers and food artisans seeking to sell their products directly to consumers."

Find the Green Plate Special on the west side of High Street, on the driveway opposite the Village Green.

Enjoy Musical Performances by...

9am-10am on Dewey's Plaza

InCommon - A contemporary a cappella singing group from Columbus, Ohio. This co-ed vocal group has 20 members ranging from “shower singers” to classically trained singers. By day, they are pilots, vets, engineers, teachers, and more—but what they all have “in common” is music. Come out and hear them take on Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” Toto’s “Africa,” and more!

9am-11am on the United Methodist Church Lawn

Open Mic - In partnership with Worthington United Methodist Church and musician, Chip Woods, the Market hosts a weekly “open-mic” on the lawn of the church. Performers of all ages are welcome to sign in upon arrival beginning at 8:30 AM. Performances will be organized into 15- or 30-minute slots beginning at 9 AM. Space is not guaranteed. We will provide speakers, microphones and cords. All you need is your instrument! (And it doesn’t hurt to bring a connecting cord, too, if you have one.)

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit the Market Wellness Doctor, stall #74, near Dewey's Plaza

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Health Tip #45: Berberine to Your Health!

Berberine is a commonly used herbal extract with many health benefits. It is a bitter compound found in the roots of several plants including goldenseal, barberry, and Oregon grape. It is a plant extract that has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for over 2,500 years for its broad range of health-promoting properties.

Berberine extract has been shown to support immune responses by increasing blood flow to the spleen and activating immune cells, such as macrophages. Berberine maintains healthy sinus function by quieting localized inflammatory response through inhibition of activator protein 1 (AP-1) 7 and thromboxane A2 from platelets. (1)

Clinical studies have shown that berberine supports cardiovascular health in a number of ways including maintaining healthy blood pressure, heart rhythm and cholesterol levels. (2)

Berberine also has been shown clinically to support healthy blood glucose through activation of AMPK (Adenosine Mono-Phosphate Kinase). Activation of this powerful metabolic enzyme triggers a variety of genes that help improve metabolism, stabilize mitochondria, and enhance insulin sensitivity. (3)

In recent years, berberine has been reported to inhibit cell proliferation and to be cytotoxic towards cancer stem cells, which are often resistant to traditional chemotherapy. Based on this evidence, many derivatives have been synthesized to improve berberine efficiency and selectivity; the results so far obtained on human cancer cell lines support the idea that they could be promising agents for cancer treatment.

Berberine is a natural WNT pathway inhibitor and is actually patented as a targeted cancer stem cell therapy. The WNT pathway controls embryonical development and cell proliferation, and is massively unregulated in cancer stem cells. Inhibiting the WNT pathways kills cancer stem cells. (4,5)
