10 Years - 2 Million Meals Served!

Happy Birthday, Worthington Resource Pantry!!! A long-time friend of the Worthington Farmers Market, the Worthington Resource Pantry now serves neighbors in 8 zip codes, including the 43085.

You're invited to party like it's 2009, this Saturday, as we celebrate their 10 years of service to the community. The festivities include some friendly competition on the Village Green with trivia and a grocery bagging game. And, you'll also find the team under the pergola on Dewey's Plaza where you can "buy one and give one" of their re-useable, commemorative shopping bags. Oh, and there could be birthday cake :-)

Can't make it to the Market on Saturday? You can send a virtual birthday present by making a donation online at: https://www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/donate

We're All Ears for This Week's Green Plate Special!

This week, we welcome the Broke Johnny food truck to the Worthington Farmers Market.

Broke Johnny specializes in all things breakfast, including fried chicken and waffles and breakfast burritos.

He'll be adding a Market spin to his breakfast burrito with sweet corn from our own Saum Family Farm for this week's Green Plate Special.

Find the Green Plate Special and the Broke Johnny food truck on the east side of High Street near US Bank during tomorrow's Market.

The Green Plate Special is a weekly collaboration between a Market producer and a local food truck that will incorporate the producer's featured product in a special dish, just for the Farmers Market! $1.00 of every Green Plate Special sold will be donated back to the Worthington Farmers Market to further our mission.

Fabric Donations Needed for Re-Useable Produce Bags

Find the donation table in the House Wine parking lot in front of Everest, tomorrow. Donate your unused fabric, cotton sheets or extra fat quarters from those quilting projects. You can also take your fabric to the Griswold Center (second floor outside of the Old Worthington Partnership office) or to the Concerts on the Green.

The Market Sharpener Returns on July 20

Just one more week to go before the sharpest tool in the barn returns!

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt in booth #74, near Dewey's Plaza

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Health Tip #53: Don't "Forget" to Eat Berries Daily!

Research is finding that instead of dementia-related diseases being the result of just bad luck or genetics, what we put into our mouths, combined with what pollutants we are exposed to, relate directly to the health of our brains later in life.

A team of international researchers, including scientists from the National Institute for Health, are uncovering evidence that has associated consumption of berries to a significant reduction in the risk of various forms of dementia. They include strawberries, bilberries, black currants, blackberries and blueberries.

Nutrients in the berries, including polyphenols, flavanols and anthocyanins to name a few, have been shown to decrease oxidative stress and provide antioxidant protection. More specifically, the flavanols and anthocyanins in blueberries have been associated with increased memory and learning.

More broadly speaking, evidence is showing that increased consumption of plant-based foods, like fruits and vegetables, are associated with a significantly decreased risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The underlying mechanism for this may be that plant-based foods are associated with reduced inflammation and oxidative stress which are associated with degenerative chronic disease.

The good news is that berries contain some of the highest antioxidant levels of all foods. These antioxidants directly reduce oxidative stress which is one way they work to reduce our risk of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. (1)

Remember to eat your berries daily!

See you at the Market!
