Happy National Farmers Market Week! Celebrate at the Worthington Farmers Market

But First, The Veggie Spy Report

In honor of National Farmers Market Week, take the Veggie Spy mini quiz!

Patty Pan Squash is:

A) A tender, flying saucer shaped squash available from several vendors at the Market.

B) A now defunct punk band from the 90's.

C) Something dreamed up by the Veggie Spy while doing "research" at House Wine.

D) Enough with the veggies already! What ELSE is at the Market?

If you answered A, you are correct! As a knowledgeable veggie aficionado, you'll love the array of fresh, local and seasonal veggie and fruit varieties available at the Market!

If you answered B or C, then you simply MUST go the Market! You'll meet farmers, learn about veggies, stock up on delicious and fresh produce and have a mighty good time!

If you answered D, come to the Market not only for fruits and veggies, but also for (deep breath) cheese, eggs, meat, bread, baked treats, pickles, hummus, candy, flowers, soap, and special activities to celebrate National Farmers Market Week!

Join Our National Farmers Market Week Celebration!

We're celebrating the value of farmers and farmers markets in our neighborhoods at this Saturday's Market with a bushel of fun, family friendly activities!

Sing along to your favorite rock and country covers during a free performance by acoustic guitarist, Free Range Chicken, near Dewey's Plaza, from 10am-12pm. Park once, and visit both the Clintonville and Worthington Farmers Markets when you hop on the trolley. Challenge friends and family to a friendly competition with our games on the Green! Enjoy corn hole, giant Jenga and an oversized Connect 4 game! And, kids can build and race their own zucchini "cars"! Free zucchinis will be available for children wanting to build their racer. Join us on E. New England Avenue, near Dewey's Pizza from 8am to 9am to build your racing zucchini. And, then, they're off! Racing begins at 9:30am. Please, limit 1 zucchini per child.

Road Closure - E. New England Avenue

As part of our National Farmers Market Week celebration, we will be closing a portion of E. New England Ave., between the House Wine parking lot and High Street to accommodate our zucchini races and musical performance.

From 7:30am to 12:00pm Saturday, there will be no through traffic on this portion of E. New England.

The Dewey's parking lot and the driveways leading to the parking lots behind House Wine and behind the United Methodist Church will still be accessible from Hartford.

Thank you for observing the road closure during this time.

Green Plate Special - Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast Sandwich

Enjoy farm fresh eggs from Brown Brothers (Paris, OH) in this week's Green Plate Special - a green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich! This week, we welcome Put It In Your Face sandwich cart for their first visit to the Worthington Farmers Market.

Find the Green Plate Special and the Put It In Your Face sandwich cart on the east side of High Street near US Bank during tomorrow's Market.

The Green Plate Special is a weekly collaboration between a Market producer and a local food truck that will incorporate the producer's featured product in a special dish, just for the Farmers Market! $1.00 of every Green Plate Special sold will be donated back to the Worthington Farmers Market to further our mission.

Community Table: Canine Companions for Independence

This week's Community Table host is Canine Companions for Independence. Meet their trained service dogs, and get to know this unique non-profit organization by visiting booth #83, on the lawn of the United Methodist Church.

Canine Companions for Independence® is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of children, adults, and veterans with disabilities by providing expertly-trained assistance dogs and a lifetime of follow-up support to ensure quality partnerships, at no cost to the recipient. A Canine Companions assistance dog utilizes 40+ task-based commands learned through professional training to increase the independence of an individual with a disability by helping them to overcome physical and social challenges and help promote independence, self-sufficiency, confidence, safety and socialization skills at home, work and in the community.

Service dogs will be in attendance at their booth. Please remember, whenever you encounter a service dog or a puppy-in-training, it is always best practice to acknowledge the individual(s) responsible for handling the dog first, before asking permission to pet the dog. Please don’t be offended if the answer is “no,” as the dog may be working and focused on a specific task.

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt in booth #74, near Dewey's Plaza

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Health Tip #57: Improve Testosterone Naturally

In most men, testosterone levels decline 1 to 2% per year beginning at age 40. This may result in muscle loss and decreased strength, increased body fat, insulin resistance, fatigue, decreased libido and depression. What are men to do?

As with many other chronic medical problems, consider beginning with lifestyle, first. Consider nutrition, exercise, toxin exposure and supplements.

First, ask the question, what do I need to add to promote healthy testosterone levels?

Plant-based foods, especially fruits and vegetables which are high in flavonoids, as well as ECGC, a catechin found in tea, both help to reduce the breakdown of testosterone. High intensity exercise, 200 minutes weekly, has been shown in studies to significantly increase testosterone levels. Supplements/botanicals to consider to support healthy testosterone levels include zinc, DHEA, quercitin, grape seed extract, pycnogenol, saw palmetto and Maca.

Second, ask what do I need to remove to promote healthy testosterone levels? Reduce consumption of refined carbohydrates and animal products. One of the most common causes of testosterone deficiency is induced by opioid pain medication use. Consider other, more natural options for pain and inflammation such as turmeric and fish oil. Avoid consumption of food and drink contaminated with plastic products such as BPA and phthalates, which have been shown to be endocrine disrupters, resulting in decreased testosterone levels.

See you at the Market!
