Here's What's Fresh at the Worthington Farmers Market this Saturday
Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy
Give Okra a Chance!
Our veggie pick of the week is the under-appreciated okra. Yes, it has an unusual texture, but there's a reason it's a staple of Southern, Cajun, Indian, and other cuisines. This versatile vegetable can be steamed, stewed, baked, pickled, or (of course) fried. And, it's loaded with fiber, vitamin A, B vitamins and more!
Did you you know that during the Civil War there was a coffee shortage, so Okra seeds were roasted and ground to form a caffeine-free substitute for coffee? So whether your motivation is historic or gastronomic, get yourself okrafied! You can find okra at 9N Farm and Wishwell.

Kemper House Worthington Returns to the Market
Did you know that September is Healthy Aging Month and World Alzheimer's Month?
The kind and caring folks from the new Worthington location of Kemper House Central Ohio will be raising awareness for these two worthy causes at the Market this Saturday.
Kemper House Worthington is a specialized Alzheimer’s and Dementia care community. As a residential facility, they work to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with memory impairment.
Pay a visit to their table in the Graeter's parking lot at this Saturday's Farmers Market to learn how they can help with loved ones suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Health Tip #62: What About Detoxification? (Part 1)
You have probably heard a friend say,"I need to do a detox." What's a detox, you ask?
"Detoxification is the constellation of physiological and psychological processes through which the body identifies, neutralizes and eliminates toxic substances, metabolic byproducts, habits and patterns.(1) All of us live in a polluted and stressful world which may lead to body systems becoming overburdened.
What are some examples of toxins? Anti-nutrients, often found in processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, caffeine and alcohol. Internal metabolic toxins produced by our bodies like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, bile, free radicals and stool. Medications. Heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium. Chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, cleaning products, cosmetics, solvents and glues. Environmental allergens. Infectious organisms.Stress. Unhealthy mental states which are often associated with addictions and overeating. Over-stimulation with noise and light pollution, TV, radio, smart phones and computers. Loss of meaning and purpose. Isolation. Nature deprivation. Negative emotions.
Our bodies and minds have inherent, built-in mechanisms to handle these toxic challenges and maintain balance through our liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal, skin, lungs, lymphatic and circulatory systems.
Symptoms often associated with toxic overload include fatigue, brain fog, insomnia, mood disturbance, joint and muscle aches, sinus congestion, headaches, bloating, irritable bowel, weight changes, heartburn, recurrent infections, low sexual drive, premature aging, fluid retention, rashes, bad breath and body odor.
The next question you may ask is,"What can I do to feel better?" I will address this next time in Detoxification (Part 2). Until then.
See you at the Market!
