We're Back! Here's What's Fresh at the Worthington Farmers Market this Saturday

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

We're BAAAACK!

After a one-week hiatus due to the annual Worthington Market Day, the Farmers Market and the Veggie Spy are back in action on October 5. Why not celebrate the return of the Market by going a tad outside your veggie comfort zone with these unusual finds?

Choy Sum is an Asian green that is completely edible - leaves, stems and even the pretty little yellow flowers! These greens, part of the Brassica family, are ideal for stir frying with garlic, rice wine and chiles. Pick them up at Toad Hill Farms.

Watermelon radish is an heirloom Chinese Daikon radish that is pink and magenta on the inside. When sliced they look like tiny watermelons! They have a mild, slightly peppery flavor with a hint of sweetness. Visit Franklinton Farms for these tasty treats.

Chestnuts are not just for roasting on an open fire in winter. They are available now and can be candied, boiled, grilled, ground into a flour or even pureed and sweetened to create yummy desserts. Chestnuts await you at Gillogly Orchard.

Mushrooms are plants, have tons of flavor and are nutritious to boot. That makes them honorary veggies! Spice up your weekend with Shitake & Onion Seasoning from Tiger Mushroom Farms.

Supplies on these specialties are limited, so come early!

What will YOU discover at the Worthington Farmers Market this week?!

Health Tip #64: Resveratrol

Resveratrol, is a natural compound found in the skin of red grapes, redskin peanuts, blueberries and Japanese knotweed. It has been shown in multiple studies to act as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. It maybe one reason that red wine, in moderation, provides some cardiovascular benefits.

Resveratrol has been shown to reduce oxidized LDL, total cholesterol triglycerides and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL(good cholesterol) (1). It has also been shown to slow or prevent various chronic diseases.

Resveratrol has also been shown to exert beneficial effects on metabolic diseases like obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and fatty liver disease. The antioxidant action of resveratrol may be the reason it is showing promise in treatment of Alzheimers disease by quenching free radicals, decreasing neuronal inflammation and improving cognitive performance.(2)

Remember, food first to get more resveratrol, then consider supplemental forms in discussion with your primary doctor.
