The Worthington Farmers Market is Back this Saturday!

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

Special Mushroom Edition!

Although mushrooms are not veggies, they share many properties with veggies including versatility and nutritional value. That makes them honorary vegetables! Button mushrooms are what most of us familiar with, but there are at least 14 varieties of commonly used edible mushrooms. Mushrooms can be sauteed, grilled, used for soups or try adding them to your pot pies. Mushrooms have loads of antioxidants, B vitamins and fiber.

Check out Tiger Mushroom for shiitakes, green oyster and yellow oyster mushrooms.

While you're at their booth say, "hello", to Te’Lario Watkins, who at 11, is the youngest entrepreneur in the Market and started the operation when he was 8! Mushrooms can also be found at Blue Owl Emporium where they also offer mushroom logs to you can grow your own.

And don't forget the veggies! These produce farmers are scheduled for the December 7 Market:

Franklinton Farms

Gillogly Orchard

Jorgensen Farms

Kennedy Farms

Rock Dove Farm

Sippel Family Farm

Tilley Farmstead

Toad Hill Farm

What will YOU discover at the Worthington Farmers Market this week?!

#getfreshwithus #weproduce #worthingtonfarmersmarket #inworthington

Thank YOU!

To the more than 300 people (!!!) in our farm and Market communities that contributed towards the GoFundMe campaign to support the Sippel Family (Kokoborrego Cheese and the Sippel Family Farm), thank YOU! We are more than halfway towards our goal of raising $50,000 for their family.

The GoFundMe campaign has been set up by the Clintonville and Worthington Farmers Markets to help the Sippel family with expenses during Ben's battle with cancer. If you would like to do so, you can still contribute to help the Sippels here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ben-and-lisa-sippel-family-farm?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet

Thank you!

Meet our Special Guest - Scoop O' Granola

By popular request, we've got GRANOLA this week!

This Saturday, enjoy the toothsome treat when you visit our special guest, Scoop O’ Granola.

Granola makers, Patrick and Liz, are known around Mount Vernon for their small-batch quality and inspired and seasonal flavors like cranberry apple walnut, simply cinnamon and carrot cake.

Give them a taste this weekend, and let us know if you'd like to see more of them at the Worthington Farmers Market.

Feeling Stressed? Consider Volunteering!

The most wonderful time of the year can also be the most stressful time of the year! Many

of us are juggling holiday parties, decorating, extra cleaning for hosting family and friends...And, then there's all those edible temptations! You might find yourself feeling a bit more anxious during the holiday season.

Did you know that donating your time can help you manage some of the negative effects related to stress and anxiety?

According to recent research, "It's generally understood that helping out others makes a person feel nice, but that experience goes beyond just the feel-good glow of altruism. Studies have found that helping others has tangible benefits, both mental and physical, from lowering your blood pressure to reducing feelings of depression."

You can read more about the mental health benefits of donating your time here: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a37nvk/volunteering-is-the-best-kept-secret-for-mental-health-stressweek2017?fbclid=IwAR0L--14zS-Q2av1uJ9VUTw9hnTSzyrDSLlzyD-z2RbfD8roIC2mDih1A30

And, if you'd like to give volunteering a try, join our team at the Worthington Farmers Market! Give an hour or stay for the entire Market. With activities ranging from set-up to cashiering to way-finding to helping with our monthly children's activity. There's something for everyone and no experience is necessary! Enjoy early access to the Market (if you're part of the set-up crew), free coffee and make some new friends!

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Alternative Approaches to Pain

The next time your lower back, knee or hip pain rears its head, consider some alternatives to NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories) like Ibuprofen and its propensity to cause GI upset/irritation.

Consider devil's claw, a botanical that comes from the root of the harpagophytum plant species. A 2007 study found five systematic reviews of devil's claw showing strong evidence for effective relief of low back, hip and knee pain. A 50mg dose of the harpagoside daily has been shown to be well tolerated with few side effects.

Another botanical to consider for pain is willow bark, an herb containing salicin, which is related to aspirin. It seems to work through combined anti-inflammatory effects of salicin and flavonoids, but without the increased propensity for GI irritation found with aspirin.

See you at the Market!
