- Christine Hawks, Market Manager
Just 2 more Saturdays to shop the Worthington Farmers Market for the holidays!
The Veggie Spy is on Vacation

Our veggie spy has traveled over the woods and through the snow to warmer weather for a couple of weeks! In the meantime, there are still plenty of cool season veggies to enjoy at the Market this week.
Browse this handy guide of winter fruits and vegetables that are best enjoyed when they're at their peak during these short, cold days. Not all of these are grown in Ohio, but you'll find many - beets, kale, lettuce and celery root - at the Market this weekend!

Free Gift Wrapping!

Purchase your gifts from the Worthington Farmers Market or the Shops at Worthington Place this Saturday and the holly, jolly elves from Kemper House Worthington will wrap them while your shop! This is a free holiday service. Find the gift wrapping station at booth #63, across from Kokoborrego Cheese, behind the giant Christmas tree in the center of the mall.
Yes, Virginia! We have Gift Certificates

Give the gift of fresh and local this holiday season with our Market gift certificates. Available in $5 and $10 denominations, you can purchase these at the Market information booth, located near the fountain (now giant Christmas tree) just inside the east entrance of The Shops at Worthington Place.
Market gift certificates are accepted by all of our producers and are used just like cash when making a purchase.
Perfect for stuffing stockings, Secret Santa gifting and remembering those that do so much for us throughout the year - teachers, your mail delivery person, babysitter and petsitter!
Feeling Stressed? Consider Volunteering!
The most wonderful time of the year can also be the most stressful time of the year! Many

of us are juggling holiday parties, decorating, extra cleaning for hosting family and friends...And, then there's all those edible temptations! You might find yourself feeling a bit more anxious during the holiday season.
Did you know that donating your time can help you manage some of the negative effects related to stress and anxiety?
According to recent research, "It's generally understood that helping out others makes a person feel nice, but that experience goes beyond just the feel-good glow of altruism. Studies have found that helping others has tangible benefits, both mental and physical, from lowering your blood pressure to reducing feelings of depression."
You can read more about the mental health benefits of donating your time here: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a37nvk/volunteering-is-the-best-kept-secret-for-mental-health-stressweek2017?fbclid=IwAR0L--14zS-Q2av1uJ9VUTw9hnTSzyrDSLlzyD-z2RbfD8roIC2mDih1A30
And, if you'd like to give volunteering a try, join our team at the Worthington Farmers Market! Give an hour or stay for the entire Market. With activities ranging from set-up to cashiering to way-finding to helping with our monthly children's activity. There's something for everyone and no experience is necessary! Enjoy early access to the Market (if you're part of the set-up crew), free coffee and make some new friends!

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.
Is a Ketogenic Food Plan Right for You?
A ketogenic (keto) diet, sometimes called a very low-carbohydrate diet, is a carbohydrate-restricted food plan in which carb intake is kept to between five and ten percent of dietary calories with the balance consisting of relatively high fat and moderate protein intake. The source of this fat and protein may vary widely, from plant-based to primarily animal-derived. Originally designed in 1921 to treat epilepsy, the keto diet was used widely in pediatric patients for many years until the advent of anti-seizure pharmaceuticals.(1)
More recently, the diet has been studied as a method of weight loss, for prevention and treatment of neurological disorders and as a therapeutic intervention for conditions related to insulin resistance, including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and type 2 diabetes.(2)
Biochemically, very low carbohydrate intake and the resulting low levels of blood glucose leads the body to release less insulin and instead use fatty acids and their metabolites, known as ketone bodies, as the primary energy source. Ketones have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and serve as a fuel source for neurons, which otherwise run only on glucose, ketones also decrease free radical damage and enhance antioxidant capacity.(1)
Recent research has consistently found that low-carbohydrate diets (both ketogenic and non) lead to greater weight loss than other food plans, including low-fat diets.(3)
Some studies have found that a ketogenic diet may allow patients to lower their use of diabetes medications or even functionally reverse their diabetes diagnosis.(4)
Another food plan that relies on ketosis is intermittent fasting, which has been shown to lead to a reduction in body fat mass and improvement in metabolic parameters among patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.(5)
On balance, there is good evidence that keto food plans in obese and diabetic populations lead to weight loss, improved glucose balance, reduced insulin resistance and retention of lean muscle mass, as well as improvements in at least some blood lipids and probably also basal metabolic rate. (6)(7)
.
Consider discussing a ketogenic food plan with your doctor.
See you at the Market!
