Rock Your Resolutions at the Worthington Farmers Market

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

Say, "Yes!" to Cress!

January is a great time to experiment with the many greens available from our farmers. One green find is cress (or land cress), a plant with small leaves and a peppery, spicy bold flavor. Cress can be cooked or eaten raw in salads. Although similar to watercress, it is a different plant. Cress is also loaded with Vitamins A and C. You can find cress at Jorgensen Farms, and they'll be happy to give you a free taste!

The following producers expect to have fresh produce this week:

9N Farm

Franklinton Farms

Gillogly Orchard

Jorgensen Farms

Rock Dove Farm

Sippel Family Farm

Tiger Mushroom Farm

Tilley Farmstead

This week's fresh finds revealed:

Meet Dr. Jenn - Our New Walk with a Doc Host

Whether it's the weather, an injury or busy schedules that are preventing you from making movement part of your routine...Come inside, and try Walk with a Doc!

On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, Worthington family medicine doc, Dr. Jenn Hetrick, will be hosting a Walk with a Doc group at the Worthington Farmers Market for the remainder of the indoor season. Walk with a Doc is a national non-profit organization with roots in communities throughout the US. The goal is to encourage people to establish a healthy lifestyle through movement, conversation and community.

The group will meet near Panera at 8am during our indoor season. The program begins with a discussion with Dr. Jenn on a current health topic and then the group will walk, stroll and roll though the mall at each individual's own pace. The walk will end just in time for the opening bell, encouraging participants to continue to keep their health top of mind by shopping the Market.

Dr. Jenn, a regular Market shopper, will be at the Market this Saturday, hosting the Community Table, to promote the program. Take that first step towards a healthier lifestyle Stop by booth #24 to welcome her and learn more about participating in next week's Walk with a Doc!

Jesse Powers Returns to Open Mic

Back by popular request, Jesse Powers returns to the Open Mic tomorrow!

Since she last performed at the Market in November, Jesse has been performing at various venues throughout the US. We're excited to enjoy her soulful, acoustic performance, tomorrow, from 10am-11:30am at Open Mic (near Panera).

Musical performances at the Market are always free to enjoy. Support for the artist, through tips or purchase of their albums, are welcome and appreciated.

January Showers Bloom Cynthia's Flowers!

Next Saturday's Market Sprouts project is an perennial crowd favorite! Help us create brightly colored, tissue paper flowers that will be sent to those undergoing cancer treatment to brighten their day. Due to weakened immune systems and the risk of infection for those under-going cancer treatments, live plants and flowers are prohibited.

Cynthia’s Flowers was inspired by Cynthia Rudolph who passed away in 2015 from lymphoma cancer. As a patient, no matter what Cynthia faced, she always stayed positive. It was important to her that others could still see beauty in life despite having to go through cancer treatments.

The flowers made next Saturday will be delivered to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute - just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Cough, cough. Sniffle and Sneeze...Flu Season is Here!

Unfortunately, Dr. Matt is under the weather and will not be at the Market this week. Feel better soon, Dr. Matt!

Fever, chills, sweats, body and joint aches, headache, cough and respiratory congestion.

That might be the flu...So what can you do?

Act pre-emptively, if possible. Get 7-8 hours of sleep, nightly. Drink plenty of clean, mineral rich water daily. Eat nutrient-dense real, organic foods like brightly colored fruits and veggies; a minimum 8 servings daily. Consume nuts and/or seeds daily. And, meditate daily to manage daily stress which tends to dampen our immune function.

Additionally, add daily supplementation with high-dose vitamin C (1000-3000 mg) with each meal time, vitamin D (1000-5000 IU) daily in the wintertime (check blood levels annually), vitamin E (mixed tocopherols - 400-1200 IU/day) ,selenium (50 mcg/day) ,zinc (25 mg/day), niacin (500 -2000 mg/day), vitamin B 1-thiamine and probiotics daily. All have been shown to increase our resistance to influenza.(1,2,3)
