Have a Family Fun Day at the Worthington Farmers Market

Family Fun!

We're not your garden variety farmers market! You may know the Worthington Farmers Market for being one of the largest farmers markets in Central Ohio. Or, maybe you think of us as your favorite place to buy your eggs. But did you know we're growing our family-friendly programming?

Walk with a Doc at the Worthington Farmers Market

Free and all ages and abilities-friendly! No sign-up needed. Walk With A Doc is a national, grassroots, non-profit organization with the goal of establishing a healthy lifestyle through movement. Join Worthington family medicine doc, Dr. Jen Hetrick, on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month for conversation, camaraderie and positive change! Meet at 8am, inside The Shops at Worthington Place, near Panera.

Market Sprouts

On the third Saturday of each month, we host a fun, free, family-friendly and farm-oriented make-and-take activity at our Market Sprouts booth. Pop over during the Market, tomorrow, to explore shapes and designs using root vegetables and greens as stamps.

Story Time with Jan

For this month's read-aloud story time, Jan will be reading my favorite book of all time - Dr. Seuss's "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" Gather 'round the open mic performance area at 10:30am this Saturday, and every third Saturday during the indoor Market, for Story Time with Jan.

Music at the Market

And, speaking of our open mic performance area, musicians are always welcome to share their talents at the open mic performance area, located near Panera, at the south entrance to the mall. Just visit the open mic stage, sign-up for a time slot and then you can use our microphone and sound system to accompany your repertoire. Performances are always free for all Market-goers to enjoy.

Market Yoga

Did you know that you can participate in a free yoga class after the Market on the third Saturday of each month of the indoor market season? Hosted by Jade Yoga and Wellness, inside The Shops at Worthington Place, this Market yoga class is offered on a first come, first served basis from 12pm-1pm. Please register for this class at the Jade Yoga and Wellness studio. Registration begins at 9am on Saturday.

Jade Yoga and Wellness also offers a Family Yoga class the second Saturday of each month at noon - Just $20 for a family of four! Sign up for the next family yoga class at the studio or online: https://jadeyogaandwellness.com/

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

Add Zing to Your Life With Horseradish!

The Veggie Spy loves horseradish, but if you don't think you're a fan, then you're missing an

opportunity to add some ZING to your meals! There's lots of ideas (but not 109) for making use of that horseradish zing here: https://www.meghantelpner.com/blog/109-things-to-do-with-horseradish/...How about some horseradish-spiked hummus?!

And horseradish does your body good; it is very high in dietary fiber as well as folate, vitamin C, calcium, potassium and magnesium. There is also some evidence that horseradish might help fight bacteria and stop spasms.

In Greek mythology, horseradish was described as being worth its weight in gold. But you can get a much better price at the Market from Franklinton Farms! Hurry, there's not much left from this harvest!

The Versatile Vegan is also a horseradish lover. Sure, it's great to add horseradish to fish, hummus and salad dressing. But, for something more creative, try this vegan Horseradish Sauce recipe: https://shalomhomestead.com/vegan-horseradish-sauce-grain-free-gluten-free/

Creamy and delicious, you'll be "grateful" you tried it!

The following producers expect to have fresh produce this week:

Franklinton Farms

Gillogly Orchard

Jorgensen Farms

Rock Dove Farm

Tiger Mushroom Farms

What will YOU discover at the Worthington Farmers Market this week?!

New Growth...Even in Winter

Did you know that our farmers and growers participate in continuing education and

professional development to improve and evolve their methods and products?

You may notice that some of your favorite farmers are absent from the Market this week. And, that's because they are attending the annual OEFFA Conference in Dayton this week. OEFFA, the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, cultivates a future in which sustainable and organic farmers thrive, local food nourishes our communities and agricultural practices protect and enhance our environment.

In alignment with this year's conference theme, a climate for change, our participating farmers will be learning how to practice more sustainable and resilient agriculture.

And, in the spirit of new growth, I'm also tending the seeds of new knowledge by working towards my Farmers Market Manager Certification through the Ohio Farmers Market Network. With a focus on current food safety regulations, farmer and customer relationships and community engagement and outreach, I look forward to bringing even more variety in products, producers and programming to the Worthington Farmers Market, reflecting the very best Central Ohio has to offer!

Welcome C.A.B.B. Farms

Please help us extend a warm welcome to cattle farmers, Dustin and Erin Bender from C.A.B.B Farms. C.A.B.B. Farms raises Angus and American Aberdeen grass-fed and finished cattle on their 68-acre farm in Lexington, Ohio. They raise their cattle to be 100% grass-fed and finished. Their animals intensively graze on grasses and forages and are fed hay and minerals throughout the winter months.

This is their first time selling at the Worthington Farmers Market and we are considering adding them to our roster. So, please pay a visit to their booth, (9), this Saturday and let us know if you'd like to see them on more Saturdays.

Around Town - Jorgensen Farms

I love seeing our farmers and artisans around town and learning about all they are doing beyond the Worthington Farmers Market. This week, I had the pleasure of learning about how farmers and farmers markets are employing sustainable practices to better coexist with area wildlife from Katie Barr of Jorgensen Farms and George Bleimes, our Market Volunteer Coordinator. Katie and George were ambassadors for the Worthington Farmers Market at the monthly Second Saturday event at the Ohio Wildlife Center. Thank you, Katie and George, for promoting the holistic benefits and positive impact of supporting local farmers and becoming less reliant on big box stores!

And, congratulations to Jorgensen Farms on hosting the opening party for the New Albany Facebook data center. It looks like one heck of a party!

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Mindful Awareness

In the end, just three things matter: How well we have lived

How well we have loved

How well we have learned to let go ―Jack Kornfield

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally and with compassion. Mindfulness is central to holistic health. It informs us about how we relate to others and how well we are doing practicing self-care.(1)

Practices to cultivate mindfulness have been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Mindfulness helps us to recognize when something is out of balance before it starts causing major symptoms. Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment with the qualities of non-judgment, kindness and curiosity.(2) At the heart of mindfulness is the idea that we suffer because we do not see the world clearly. The radical promise of mindfulness is clarity, ease and happiness.

Mindfulness meditation fosters general mental well-being and the development of specific capacities such as calm, clarity and concentration. It is important to emphasize that mindful awareness is an opportunity to be in the wholeness of life, including suffering, joy, peace, unrest, creativity, fullness, emptiness—all of it.

There is an impressive body of research favoring the use of mindful awareness practices. It is shown to reduce psychological symptoms associated with our most common chronic diseases like cancer, hypertension, auto-immune diseases, depression, post-traumatic stress and anxiety.(3) It reduces physiologic markers of stress/inflammation such as cortisol, c-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, blood pressure and heart rate.(4)

It lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension, reduces stress, improves immune function and enhances a sense of well-being. It is also associated with decreasing chronic pain intensity, related disability and medication use and shown to be helpful with weight loss in overweight and obese individuals.(5)

Be in the moment today.

Be Well,
