Blueberries – the Perfect Food?

Several producers have blueberries! Blueberries are native to North America and Native Americans have been consuming them for over 10,000 years. They called them “star” berries and believed they were a gift from the heavens because the blossom end forms a five-pointed star. Blueberries were used for medicinal purposes, blue dyes, and of course for eating.

Commercial blueberry varieties were developed in the 1900s and they have become a major crop in the US. Blueberries have tremendous health benefits, some of which come from anthocyanin, the compound that provides the blue color and is important for heart and bone health. And blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, fiber, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K. And they taste fantastic! Get your blueberries at the Blueberry Patch, Toad Hill, Mayapple Farms, and Gillogly Orchards.

And here’s a berry bonus – Franklinton has the start of their blackberry crop!

The Versatile Vegan has fallen in love with this Vegan Blueberry Mug Cake. Yes, it’s a small cake in a mug, and it’s delicious! Scale up the recipe to make more than one mug. Another winner is this Vegan Blueberry-Banana and Praline French Toast Casserole. A “buckle” is a rich, dense cake made with seasonal fruit. Thrill your palate with this Vegan Blueberry Buckle!

Foraged & Sown

We harvested our hard neck garlic on July 4th! This year, we chose to cut and drop the stalks in field before pulling the heads from the ground. We used our trusty weed trimmer, which worked wonderfully. All that rain made the ground nice and soft, so the garlic pulled right out by hand. The hard-neck variety we grow is called Music, which offers a medium-hot, true garlic flavor. It’s beautifully streaked with a pink/purple hue on the skin.Keep an eye out for garlic on our market tables in coming weeks!

Thank you to the City of Worthington Government for supporting us on this sustainability project and thank you to The Worthington Partnership Green Team for working so hard to raise the funds to make it happen!

Don't forget to "BYOWB" on Saturday. Bottled water will no longer be sold at the market information booth.

Pick Up After Your Pooch

Poop, it happens. Follow Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District ‘s program and P.U.P. (Pick Up Poop) then pop the poop in the LANDFILL side of our downtown waste collection bins.

Because poop is a contaminant when it comes to recycle collection. And could lead to the entire recycling collection being sent to the landfill.

But isn’t it natural? Shouldn’t I leave it to fertilize the soil?

Your pet does not eat a natural local diet. Their waste washes into the storm drains and “Dog waste contains nitrogen and phosphorus, which can deplete oxygen that fish and other water-based life need to survive, as well as encourage the growth of harmful algae.

It is also considered a significant source of pathogens like fecal coliform, a disease-causing bacteria” (www.usda.gov)

The Worthington Farmers Market is an event of The Worthington Partnership.
