Worthington Farmers Market: December 17

December 17, 2016

A Useful Gift with a Great Cause

In partnership with Chipotle Mexican Grill, the Worthington Farmers Market announced the first annual Worthington Farmers Markets Reusable Bag Design Contest in early 2016. The competition presented an opportunity for students to showcase their talent on reusable shopping bags that are now available at the Worthington Farmers Market.

This year’s theme was “Nourish Your Community.” Students were asked to include imagery inspired by the spring/summer season and the corresponding regional market goods, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. We also asked participants to illustrate the spirit of farmers’ markets and include the words “2016 Worthington Farmers Market.”

To say we were impressed by the entries is an understatement. This year's winner is Worthington Kilbourne Middle School seventh grader, Andrea Nadolny!

Read more about Andrea and her path to winning the first annual Worthington Farmers Markets Reusable Bag Design Contest.

Q  Tell us about yourself - what grade are you, what school do you attend, etc..

I am a seventh grade student at Kilbourne Middle School. I play the violin and baritone and love photography in addition to just art in general. I am on the KMS gymnastics team and compete in the floor and beam events. I am also very active in Girl Scouts. I have earned my Bronze Award and am working on my Silver with two friends to make Worthington even better. I am very active with community service events.

Q  What inspired you to participate in this contest?

A  My parents saw the contest announced on Facebook and told me about it. It seemed like a fun challenge to illustrate a concept that conveyed all of the fresh produce available at the market.

Q  Tell us about your inspiration for the design? Is this typical for your artistic style? Did you try something different?

A  I’ve been working with collages for many years, entering the local school art contest, Reflections, several times with variations of that concept. I love the flexibility of the medium when working with collages. I started by brainstorming a list of local produce and then chose which ones to include based on variations in color, shape, and size.

Q  What do you love about the Worthington Farmers Market?

A  I love the diversity of the local produce. I love the friendly small town atmosphere. Honey, tomatoes and samples are the items that always go into my basket!

Q  What is something we should know about you?

A  I love cooking! Baking sweets and making edible art is another one of my hobbies. Being able to fuse tastes together gives me immense satisfaction.

As the winner, Andrea was awarded a $1,000 scholarship provided by Chipotle Mexican Grill and her artwork is displayed in SNAP Worthington, along with all art submitted to the contest. Additionally, two runners-up received $500 scholarships. (Stay tuned in the coming weeks to meet our runners-up.)

The reusable shopping bags are part of the Worthington Farmers Market initiative to promote healthy, environmentally friendly communities. Farmers’ markets attendees have the opportunity to purchase these custom designed tote bags this season from the Information Table.
