Worthington Thanksgiving Farmers Market

Thank you for the community, the collaboration, the time and the food we share, each week, through the Worthington Farmers Market. The memories made, the traditions begun and the friends that feel like family bring us together every Saturday and carry us through the weeks, months, years. From our fields and kitchens to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Lending a Hand - The Sippels

If you've enjoyed cheese from Kokoborrego Cheese Company or the beautiful vegetables from the Sippel Family Farm, then you've been acquainted with Ben and Lisa Sippel.

16 years ago, Ben and Lisa Sippel began their journey as first generation small farmers, providing local, sustainable and organic produce, meat and cheese. As a young couple of 23 years old, they built their farm in Mount Gilead, Ohio from the ground up with the two of them (mostly Ben) contributing the love, sweat and tears it takes to grow produce and steward sheep and pigs. The Sippel Family Farm was their dream.

Part of both the Clintonville Farmers' Market and Worthington Farmers Market communities, Ben and Lisa have been putting their all into the farm and also a more personal investment - Ben's health.

Ben was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015 and has undergone six different treatments since then. This year has been especially challenging for the Sippel family due to the progression of Ben's cancer. And, we're asking for your help because at this moment the biggest concern for the Sippel family is losing the farm. Without the sales from produce grown on the farm, paying the mortgage for the farm is nearly impossible.

During this season of giving thanks and gratitude for all that we have, please lend a hand to our friends and neighbors, Ben and Lisa. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by the Clintonville and Worthington Farmers Markets to help the Sippel family with expenses during Ben's battle with cancer. You can contribute to help the Sippels here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ben-and-lisa-sippel-family-farm?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet

Thank you!

Thanksgiving Picks from our Veggie Spy

Planning Your Thanksgiving Menu? Don't Forget Sweet Potatoes!

Sweet potatoes are a Thanksgiving staple for many folks. They can be roasted, mashed, featured in casseroles, baked in pies, pureed into soup and plenty more. Besides being versatile and delicious, they are loaded with Vitamins A and C and antioxidants.

Sweet potatoes do suffer from a bit of an identity crisis. They are actually more closely related to tomatoes and eggplant than to white potatoes. Though they are most often confused with yams, sweet potatoes are sweeter, have less starch and are more moist. And, the flesh of sweet potatoes is not always orange; it can be white or even purple!

So, hop on the sweet potato train to educate your mind, and make your taste buds happy!

Sweet potatoes are available at Tilley Farmstead.

Indoor season for the Worthington Farmers Market is underway! Find us inside the Shops at Worthington Place on Saturdays from 9am-12pm. There may be a chill in the air, but there is plenty of local produce available at the Market! And, remember to bring your reusable produce bags!

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Sauna, Disease and Mortality - No Sweat, No Health!

Regular sauna use is associated with reduced rate of disease and death. Sauna use is characterized by short-term passive exposure to extreme heat. Sauna sessions typically last about 20 minutes and the temperature range is from 113F up to a high of 212F,  depending upon the type of heating source used, per the 2015 Kupio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIHD)(1).

The physiologic responses to exercise are very similar to those we experience when we exercise at moderate intensity. Sauna use may be an alternative for those who are unable to engage in physical activity.(2)

Sauna use 2-3 times per week showed a 27% decreased probability to die from cardiovascular related diseases. When sauna use was increased to 4-7 times per week, there was a 50% decreased probability to die from cardiovascular related diseases. Additionally, this group also showed 40% decreased probability to die from all causes. 2-3 saunas sessions weekly also revealed a 66% reduced probability of developing dementia and 4-7 sessions weekly revealed a 77% decreased probability of developing psychiatric disorders in the KIHD study.(1)

How does regular sauna use seem to impart such significant health effects? Sauna use has been shown to balance the effects of inflammation which we now better understand the importance of in decreasing chronic disease and improving health. Additionally,

regular sweating has been shown to significantly increase the excretion of toxicants like heavy metals (aluminum, cadmium, cobalt, lead) as well as BPA and phthalates used in plastics. These toxins tend to bio-accumulate in muscle, fat and the organs of humans and have been shown to be associated with a host of chronic illnesses.(2)

See you at the Market!
