Happy New Year! What's New at the Worthington Farmers Market?

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

Growing Veggies in January? Absolutely!

A major supermarket chain recently launched a "Fresh" campaign to highlight their focus on fresh food for everyone. News flash! The Worthington Farmers Market has been offering fresh, locally produced food for over 30 years! And that includes produce grown in the winter.

How do our farmers do it? There are several techniques for extending the growing season,

even into the coldest of days here in Central Ohio. Greens and root vegetables, in particular, can still grow in chilly weather. A greenhouse, even it it is not continually heated, can get surprisingly warm in winter. Some small farms use hoop houses, which typically consist of a plastic or metal frame covered by clear plastic, as pictured here. These are lighter and cheaper than greenhouses and are very effective in significantly extending the growing season.

Ask you favorite Market farmer for their winter growing secrets, and you'll appreciate what they grow even more!

The following producers expect to have fresh produce this week:

9N Farm

Franklinton Farms

Gillogly Orchard

Jorgensen Farms

Rock Dove Farm

Tiger Mushroom Farm

Tilley Farmstead

This week's fresh finds revealed:

Let it steep, let it steep, let it steep!

So, you think you don't have time to brew a good cup of coffee? Let it steep, and you'll be sipping a freshly brewed hot cup of coffee in 5 minutes! New year, new brew!

Ramble Coffee revealed these new, portable, single-serve coffee bags at last week's Market. Each bag is filled with freshly ground coffee, currently available in three single-origin varieties: Ethiopia - Limu, Brazil - Sul de Minas and Mexico - Chiapas. The single-serve bags are nitro-sealed for freshness, and the bags and all of the packaging is compostable!

Not sure what to order or how to brew, ask John and Sara, owners of Ramble Coffee. You'll find them every Saturday at the Worthington Farmers Market. Whether they are perfecting a roast, learning about a farm or co-op or experimenting with brewing methods, a spirit of exploration leads their way.

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Resveratrol

Last week's health tip was about inflammation as it relates to chronic disease. Today, we will take a look at resveratrol, a natural compound present in the skin of red grapes, Japanese knotweed root, peanut skins and blueberries. Resveratrol is present in these plants to protect them from fungal attacks and UV radiation. When we consume resveratrol, these protective effects are available to us, likely due to resveratrols antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, resveratrol activates an enzyme called sirtuin 1 which plays a role in aging/longevity.

More specifically, resveratrol has been shown in studies to be beneficial in the treatment of metabolic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and fatty liver disease. Studies are also showing positive benefits of resveratrol to reduce neuronal inflammation and improve cognitive performance in patients with dementia. Finally, studies have widely shown that caloric restriction increases lifespan across multiple species. Resveratrol through it's abillity to activate sirtuin 1 seems to mimic the effects of caloric restriction.

Consider adding foods rich in resveratrol to your diet daily to help mitigate the oxidative  and inflammatory effects of the standard American diet.(1)
