What a Difference a Week Makes - This Week at the Worthington Farmers Market

When I moved to Ohio, someone shared the saying with me, "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute." Last Saturday, we enjoyed spring-like temperatures near 70. And, this

 weekend...winter returns!

A dreary Ohio Saturday is the perfect excuse to come inside with us! This Saturday, we celebrate the return of some customer favorites - Simple Times Mixers, Patisserie Lallier, The Blueberry Patch and Proctor Center Farm; we'll be crafting Cynthia's Flowers that will be donated to patients at the James Cancer Center at the Market Sprouts Table and Jade Yoga and Wellness is hosting January's free Market yoga session!

Want to try something new? Learn how to beat those winter blues with Dr. Jenn Hetrick for Walk with a Doc. Or, bring the little ones for Story Time with Jan, an interactive read-along.

No matter the weather, there's something new and something to do at the Worthington (indoor!) Farmers Market!

Fresh Picks from our Veggie Spy

Try Something New in Your Veggie Sack - Get Yourself Some Celeriac!

Celeriac (sometimes called celery root) is a root vegetable related to celery. Celeriac is popular in Eastern and Northern European countries and is commonly used in salads, soups, casseroles and stews. It gets slightly sweeter when cooked and works well mashed, baked, roasted or boiled.

Celeriac is packed with fiber and vitamins B6, C and K. It has an odd appearance with its rough, knobby surface covered in tiny rootlets.

Celeriac has been a food staple for a long time; it is believed to be the same plant as selinon, mentioned in Homer's Odyssey, written around 850 B.C. So get in touch with your "roots" and check out celeriac at Jorgensen Farms!

Beat Those Winter Blues When You Walk with a Doc

“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.”

- Thomas Edison

Join Dr. Jenn Hetrick on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month for conversation, camaraderie and positive change!

This Saturday, Dr. Jenn will be sharing healthy ideas for beating those winter blues!

Walk With A Doc is a national, grassroots, non-profit organization with the goal of establishing a healthy lifestyle through movement.

Meet-up at 8am, near the Panera, inside The Shops at Worthington Place. Dr. Jenn will lead a brief discussion on the day's health topic and then participants will walk, stroll and roll, inside the mall, at their own pace.

This program is free and all ages and abilities-friendly! No sign-up needed. Walk will finish in time for the 9am opening Market bell.

 January Showers Bloom Cynthia's Flowers!

Saturday's Market Sprouts project is an perennial crowd favorite! Help us create brightly colored, tissue paper flowers that will be sent to those undergoing cancer treatment to brighten their day. Due to weakened immune systems and the risk of infection for those under-going cancer treatments, live plants and flowers are prohibited.

Cynthia’s Flowers was inspired by Cynthia Rudolph who passed away in 2015 from

lymphoma cancer. As a patient, no matter what Cynthia faced, she always stayed positive. It was important to her that others could still see beauty in life despite having to go through cancer treatments.

The flowers made at Saturday's Market will be delivered to The James for patients to enjoy.

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Healthy Fats in Your Diet are a Must!

Many chronic diseases seen in developed countries are driven by inflammation. The number one killer in the US continues to be cardiovascular disease and it too is driven by underlying inflammation. How can fat in your diet help prevent heart disease? Your probably saying, "I thought fat was the cause of heart disease." Not all fats are the same. We must look closer.

Omega 3 fats are polyunsaturated fats that are essential for our health! When consumed, these fats are broken down by our bodies into substances that reduce inflammation. Omega 3 fats are found in highest concentration in cold water fish.

A recent study has shown that reduced levels of omega 3 fats, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are associated with increased risk of developing coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, suggesting a protective role for adequate levels of these healthy fats.

The cold water fish with the highest concentrations of these healthy fats are wild salmon, salmon roe, cod, sardines, mackerel and herring. Another way to increase these fats is through supplementation with fish oil capsules.
