Celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Worthington Farmers Market

Celebrate Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rat

January 25 is the Chinese New Year, a celebration of the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. You can celebrate by making this delicious and easy vegan Chinese recipe for Braised Bok Choi with Shiitake Mushrooms.

Find shiitakes at the Market from Tiger Mushroom Farm! Also, Jorgensen Farms will have bok choi, but shop early because supplies are limited. The history, folklore and rituals of the Chinese New Year are fascinating. Learn more here: http://www.chineseamericanfamily.com/chinese-new-year/

Behold the Mighty Microgreen

Microgreens are young vegetable greens grown from seeds that are approximately 1–3 inches tall. Though small in size, they are mighty in nutritional content. Most microgreens contain about five times more nutrients than found in the mature leaves of the same plants. Nutrients found in microgreens include vitamins C, E , K, and beta-carotene. And, there are a wide variety of microgreens available at the Market including broccoli, daikon radish, kale, pea shoots and sunflowers. They are ideal for salads and on sandwiches. So, go big on microgreens this Saturday! Microgreens are available at 9N Farms and Franklinton Farms.

The Market Wellness Doctor's Weekly Health Tip

Visit Dr. Matt near the East entrance inside The Shops at Worthington Place

Lifestyle Matters. How we eat, move, sleep and manage stress has an enormous impact on health and longevity.

Cholesterol is not the Bad Guy!

Heart disease has continued to increase over the last 50 years, despite the general recommendation to the American public to follow a low fat diet over the same time period.

We have also been led to believe that heart attack rates and mortality go up in direct  relationship to total cholesterol levels. In fact, there are good studies showing just the opposite. One large study showed those people treated with statin drugs who had a total cholesterol less than 160 mg/dl had the highest mortality rate, while those with total cholesterol 250 mg/dl had the lowest mortality rates.

We must exercise caution when lowering total cholesterol. Cholesterol has many very important functions including cell membrane fluidity, signal transmission, immune function, acting as a precursor to five major classes of steroid hormone production and also serves to transport fat soluble vitamins, anti-oxidants drugs and toxins.(1,2)

Have a conversation with your doctor about cholesterol and heart disease.
